School / Location Sellect

Im working on the school/ location selection right now. I have started to implement it into the actual pages. I just cant quite figure out some small stuff with it.

But I guess there is a lot to do on it because I need to implement it into the edit system as well.

I have some new ideas for the site, including an illustrator repository for people to work on making the diagrams better.

So I know it has been a while, but I have been really busy with a website design for my school. But today I found out some people wanted to see the image add system I made, but it was not working. Well that was because I never finished.

So today when I came home I finished it. Although in the past 10 days I have learned a ton with AJAX and awesome effects. So Im thinking of redoing it.

I am also offering free movie tickets to anyone who writes an article, but you probably saw all about that on the front page.

So it probably looks like I have not done anything on this guy lately. Well I have been busy. BUT, I actually took on a job so that I could do something over here.

I will announce it later, but I am buying a pack of 50 movie tickets to give to people to write articles for RISDpedia. So I feel this is good enough reason to not be so busy here.

It all comes back to RISDpedia in the end.

Look, Link, Hierarchy… more?

So I submitted the link-suggest extension to the databases of wiki extensions ( you can see it here if you really care). This is my second extension I have made now. I published it mostly because I wanted other people to help out with it.

You may have noticed (who is you… does anyone actually read this?) that the front page as changed. Yeah, I redid it. After reading parts of a book called Don’t Make Me Think, I decided it needed to be reduced. So I cut almost all of the material off the front page, and put a snazzy javascript accordion thing on there. This way it s very simple looking, but you can click to find out more, and get a nice experience doing so.

Also in that book I mentioned it talked of Hierarchies, and how necessary they are. So I added one. Well, really there have been there for a bit now, but I put them just below the name of the article so you can really understand where you are. good example here. I ended up having to hack a bit of code to do so, but I was able to trace how it was done for a very similar function, and was able to copy and manipulate it to do wat I wanted.

All in all, I was really just making things better.

Im working on a new plugin that is kind of crude right now. But anyways, it helps you add links to articles. Pressing the “+ link” button adds a search field to search in. Typing in this field automatically searches for articles and adds a list of available articles. You can cick one and it will add the link to your article you are editing.

I think I need some people to help me out with it to clean it up because it is a little on the wonky side. I havnt even tried it in FF or IE yet.

EDIT: I checked and it works in FF, but IE 6 and 7 have a problem when it kicks the ink to the beginning of the article no mater what. I think it may be because you need to click in an other input box and it sees that as reason to forget the positioning of the textarea.

School Select

Im working on a way to localize the information in the pages no matter where you are. In the top right corner you may see a drop down menu to select your location. Right not it does not do much, however, it will. Selecting your location here will then change the availability information to match.

My proof of concept is here. Selecting a location will change the displayed information on this page.

I just started a blog for RISDpedia. I figured I could use this to show and talk about what I am working on. As so much of this project goes on behind the scenes, it probably often looks like nothing has been done in a while, but I assure you that I am always working on it.

Right now I am working on a few adjustments and tweaks to make the site much easier to use. I just refreshed the look of the site, and Im going to be redoing the front page soon as well.
