Acryla Gouache

General Overview

The new tool for almost every RISD freshman, gouache is an opaque, thick watercolor that was used for graphic design and such before computers were around. The medium can be used to make flat, solid shapes that have a similar look to acrylic as well as the ability to be used like traditional watercolors when mixed with more water.

Whereas regular gouache can be reactivated if water is applied, acryla gouache is a gouache/acrylic hybrid that results in quicker drying time and is permanent much like dried acrylics. However, before it dries it handles exactly like traditional gouache and can be mixed into. This is very desireable for artists who like gouache but want to avoid accidental mixing and means layering colors is fast and easy.

Tips, Tricks & How-Tos

Arches is a paper commonly used, but Rives BFK is a very easy and almost fool proof paper to use since it is a silkscreen paper that takes well to water-based mediums.

Since acryla gouache is permanent once dry, you can apply thinner layers (water it down or mix it with gel medium) to glaze over it and add transperent colors.

Not Recommended

Newbies to gouache can find acryla gouache frustrating due to the quick drying factor. If you are still learning how to handle it, traditional gouache may be what you want

Like all paints, some gouache contains harmful minerals (like cadmium). People will sometimes say they are harmless in gouache (unlike in another medium like oils), but the truth is they are still unhealthy substances. So keep that brush out of your mouth!
