General Overview

Artguard is a type of barrier cream created by Winsor and Newton to protect the painter from various toxic substances found in the paint. Once it is rubbed into the skin, it forms a thin, lightweight, invisible barrier on your hands. This silicone-based cream also conditions your hands as it protects because it contains waxes, oils and glycerin.

Artguard also facilitates the cleaning process. The guard, as well as any paint sitting on it, can be easily removed with soap and water.

There are other brands of this type of barrier cream if you do not wish to try this brand.

Tips, Tricks & How-Tos

Rub the cream into the skin of your hands and wait for it to try. It is also recommended to use gloves as well for additional protection. It is not sticky or greasy, and almost feels as if you having nothing on, so make sure during application that you do not miss any spots.

Artguard does come off with soap and water; so if you wash your hands, you

Not Recommended

I do not recommend using gloves without artguard underneath. Some paints and solvents weaken and even break the gloves, and without some backup protection you could absorb some of the chemicals.

It is very important to use some sort of protection from paint because of the numerous toxic substances. A combination of gloves and artguard is best.

Some hazardous substances that can be found in paints (oil, acrylic, etc) include lead, cadmium, cobalt, mercury, chromic oxide, cyanide, manganese, zinc, barium, etc. They are in the pigments not the binder, and because of that it can be just as toxic in oil and acrylic as it can be in gouache and watercolor.

Availability

This product is sold in most art stores and can be easily found on line. In the RISD store, it is below the paint mediums near the front register.
