From RISDpedia
The new tool for almost every RISD freshman, gouache is an opaque, thick watercolor that was used for graphic design and such before computers were around. The medium can be used to make flat, solid shapes that have a similar look to acrylic as well as the ability to be used like traditional watercolors when mixed with more water.
