RISD picture collection

The risd picture collection is an important and useful resource. It is a collection of images, divided into three sections-

  1. mounted reproductions of notable drawings, paintings, and sculpture, organized by artist and nationality.
  2. a collection of photographic reproductions of artwork, organized by artist.
  3. a photographic reference clipping collection, organized by subject.

The picture collection is enourmous, containing over 470,000 images. Their collection can be searched here The range of subjects in the photographic reference section is diverse and comprehensive, containing everything from pictures of tractors to starfish. The collection is thorough and well orgainzed. It is easily accessible, and staff are available to answer questions and help in the retrieval of material. They will also clean up after you and return the images you have looked at. The picture collection room has a large work space, with tables and a scanner/copier/computer suite. Images are also available for check out.

RISD students and faculty may check out up to 200 images for 4 weeks.

The picture collection is located on the second floor of 15 Westminster, above the library. it is accessible by the second bank of elevators, located after the entrance to the Portfolio Cafe. No special card access is required to reach the second floor. After the doors open, turn left down the hall and walk to the double doors. Go through them, and take a right, walking down the hall past the slide collections. at the end of the hallway, take another right and the picture collection will be right in front of you.

Picture Collection Hours:

Sunday 11am-7pm

Monday through Thursday 8:30am-7pm Friday 8:30am-4:30pm
